- 1790: Vincent Oge and Jean-Baptiste Chevannes come into rebellion for civil rights for people of color
- 1791: Slaves start burning plantations and killing masters, this causes economic collapse
- 1791-1799: Toussaint's soldiers fought against French government, Royalists, invaders and free-colored leaders
- 1793: Léger-Félicité Sonthonax ended slavery in the colony and made Toussaint part of the French army which leads to further issue.
- In 1794 Toussaint L'Ouverture, the leader of the Saint Domingue rebellion, abandoned his Spanish allies, joined the forces of the French Republic as a brigadier general, and turned his troops against Spain.
- 1801: French government was starting to reconsider the of ending slavery. Napoleon Bonaparte was one of the few main leaders.
- Late 1801: Napoleon decided to get an army together and go back to Haiti to reestablish slavery
- In 1802, Napoleon Bonaparte, who had seized power in France in 1799, sought to restore slavery to the West Indies through political guile and military force. Toussaint was captured and exiled, but the fighting continued under the leadership of Jean Jacques Dessalines and Henri Christophe. On January 1, 1804, Dessalines proclaimed himself ruler of the new nation, which was called Haiti, a "higher place."
- 1803: Toussaint dies in prison
- 1803, November 18: Battle of Vertieres fought between Haitian Rebels against French, Haitians won now it is recognized as national holiday.
- 1804: Haiti becomes independent from France
